Kefalonia – turquoise waters and mesmerizing views

Popin Greece » Blog » Ionian Islands and Sea Coast » Kefalonia – turquoise waters and mesmerizing views

Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian Islands with crystal clear turquoise water and captivating, almost mesmerizing views that you can enjoy from the top of the high white cliffs rising above the beaches.

The western part of Kefalonia has mountainous terrain and secluded beaches, some of which are accessible only by water. The rest of the island is mostly low, with many resorts and crowds of tourists who seem to have conquered this island! Definitely, if you decide to visit Kefalonia, you should take at least 4-5 days, due to the size of the island and the narrow mountain roads that make it difficult to move around the island.

The adventure island of Kefalonia

If you are already in Kefalonia, start your adventure from the cave with Lake Melissani. The view is almost unrealistic! The feeling you feel when you are in this magical place is so amazing that you have to pinch yourself to make sure that everything is true! But be careful! You do not have much time for this, as the boat trip lasts no more than 5 minutes. There is a long line of people willing to board one of the three boats that enter the cave, so you have to be patient. I tried to capture every nook and cranny of the cave, to catch every glimmer of the sun’s rays in the water, and so imperceptibly the five minutes passed without me fully enjoying the cave. So do not waste your time in photos, but try to absorb with your eyes, everything you can perceive.
The interesting thing about Messalini is that in ancient times it was known as the cave of nymphs. The cave is 100 meters long, as the lake occupies 1/3 of its area, and the water in the lake is a mixture of sea and fresh.

After Messalini Cave, the nearest landmark you can visit is Myrtos Beach. It is located about 25 minutes from the cave and can be reached by a beautiful, extremely winding road, revealing the view of the light blue waters of Myrtos. Do not imagine the typical white sand beach, as almost all Ionian beaches. Walking along the beach of Myrtos is difficult due to the small round pebbles with which it is dotted.

On both sides, Myrtos is surrounded by high rocky shores, and deep in the sea there are magnificent small caves that you can visit if you want to enjoy an unforgettable experience.

What else can you see in Messalini? Of course, the Drogarty Cave! This is the most unique place in Kefalonia, which you must include in your list of activities to try on the island. Due to its remarkable acoustics, the cave has been used for various concerts, one of which by the famous Maria Callas. In the past, Drogarty was considered the home of dragons, hence its name! Now, most tourists associate it with its large hall, with an area of 900 square meters, where you can enjoy numerous stalactites and stalagmites.
Definitely the most unforgettable experience for me was the walk on the unique beach Xi. It is famous for its red sand and no matter how many photos of this beach you have seen, you will never get an idea of this place unless you visit it! Stepping on the red soft sand, you realize that you have never experienced such a feeling in your life. It is such an unreal and at the same time pleasant feeling that you can enjoy only here. Of course, all the beaches of Kefalonia are beautiful, even lovely, but only Xi offers the unusual red color of its sand.

Another memorable beach in Kefalonia is Kaminia beach, where twice a year the sea turtles go out to lay their eggs. So if you are in Kefalonia in May or September, you must go to Kaminia beach. Access to it is free, so feel free to head in that direction!
