Afitos is a beautiful traditional village that stretches over several hills in the eastern part of Kassandra, the westernmost arm of the Halkidiki peninsula. It is close to other famous summer destinations – it is only 2 km from Nea Fokea, 4 km from Kallithea, 9 km from Kriopigi, 17 km from Nea Potidea and 88 km from Thessaloniki.
As Afitos is built 50-70 meters above sea level, it manages to offer an incredible view of the Gulf of Toron, the middle arm of Sithonia and the east coast of Kassandra. The uniqueness of the settlement, however, is enhanced by both its natural and historical significance. Its history dates back to 3000 BC. and is known as the colony of Afitos, also participated in the Persian Wars, flourished as a member of the Athenian Maritime Union and in Roman times, when he minted his own money with Zeus Amon.
Today, Afitos is a resort that has managed to retain its traditional charm of the past. The houses are built of stone with excellent architecture, the streets are narrow and cobbled and the squares are small and decorated with flowers. Tourists will definitely feel the authentic atmosphere and have the opportunity to explore the many Orthodox Christian churches built mainly in the 19th century: “St. Demetrius” , “St. George”,” Assumption of the Virgin Mary”, “St. Athanasius” , “St. Nicholas” and others. On the central square in the house of Aletras is the Folklore Museum, which houses a number of works of art and tools used in the past by the locals of the area. During the summer season there is also a festival which consists mainly of street art and musical performances.
