NEA POTIDEA, KASSANDRA
Nea Potidea (the “Gates of Kassandra”) is a relatively large resort village located at the very beginning of Kassandra – the westernmost arm of the Halkidiki peninsula. It is 6km from Nea Moudania, 33km from Polygyros and 70km from Thessaloniki. An interesting fact is that Nea Potidea is built on the ancient town of Potidea on a narrow isthmus. The Potidea Canal was dug through it, which actually connects the Toronian and Thessaloniki Gulf. This made the city an important communication centre, also possessing a harbour full of fishing boats sailing around the clock through the canal. There is a bridge over the canal, which tourists don’t miss to visit to take photos and enjoy the wonderful view.
Nea Potidea is surrounded on the east and west by the waters of the Aegean Sea. The beach bars, clubs and cafes are mainly located in the eastern part and overlook the shores of Sithonia. The beach is sandy and quite long – almost 2km, and along it there is a large pedestrian area, which in the summer season is a popular place for recreation. On the western side of the peninsula are the harbour and a string of traditional fish taverns serving fresh seafood specialities.
During the summer months, Nea Potidea is a centre of attraction and a favourite place for tourists, as it has been considered the gateway to the entire peninsula of Kassandra since the past. Around the canal of Nea Potidea is even preserved the fortress wall of Justinian, which once protected the ancient settlements of Potidea and Kassandra from raids. In the settlement you can also see the Doric tomb, the remarkable temple of St. George and the Church of the Holy Archangels, which is 1km from the town, but also the only one of its kind to survive from the great Dohiar metoch. The area also offers a large number of coastal paths with spectacular views.
