PEFKOCHORI, KASSANDRA
Pefkochori is an ancient village located in the southeastern part of Kassandra – the westernmost arm of the Halkidiki peninsula, 3 km southeast of Hanioti, 4 km north of Agia Paraskevi and only 100 km southeast of the city of Thessaloniki. Literally, its name translates to “pine town”, as the whole area around it abounds in pine forests.
Ruins of a Roman settlement and a hoard of coins of Lysimachus, one of the commanders of Alexander the Great who eventually became king of Thrace, Asia Minor and Macedonia, have been found in the harbour area in the past. Now Pefkochori is a beautiful summer resort that offers its visitors three wonderful beaches – Kera Maria, Glarokavos and Kanavitsa. The sand is fine, mixed with small pebbles in places. The water is of course crystal clear, but you should be aware of the sea urchins that lurk just off the shore.
Characteristic of the settlement are the whitewashed houses surrounded by citrus trees along the Toronian Bay. The area is a popular summer destination, offering many opportunities for diving, snorkelling and parasailing. In the evenings, guests of Pefkchori can enjoy a breathtaking walk with spectacular views of the setting sun. The small restaurants offer fairly traditional Mediterranean cuisine of fresh seafood, topped off with musical performances of Greek music. There are plenty of souvenir shops, cafes, taverns and even a small amusement park for the little ones.
