LIMENARIA, THASSOS ISLAND – Nice climate and sandy beaches

Limenaria is the second largest town on the island of Thassos, after Limenas and is 42 km southwest of it, opposite the shore of Mount Athos (Holy Mountain). It has a population of about 2,000 inhabitants. Limenaria is a modification of the name Limenas, meaning – “the smaller city”. The town was founded only in the 19th century and became known when the German company Speidel started to mine ore. Nowadays, tourists have the opportunity to visit the abandoned mine, and the Speidel office still exists, set on a hill in the southeast of the city.

Beaches in Limenaria

As Limenaria is located in a magnificent area, the climate there is perhaps the mildest on the whole island. All along the city stretches beautiful sandy beaches with crystal water. The city beach of Limenaria is about 2km., mixed with small and large stones and is located near the center of the town. However, there are several other very nice beaches in the area:

1) Tripiti beach – 4 km west in the vicinity of Limenaria. This picturesque bay is covered with pine slopes, the sea is blue-green combined with golden fine sand. Tripiti has its name from a crack in the rocks through which seawater enters and forms a natural circular shaped pool. This natural heritage makes the area one of the most beautiful spots on Thassos Island.

2) Metalia beach – east of Limenaria. Walking through the woodland, you reach the ” beach of the quarries” – so-called because of the remains of abandoned but still available quarries . The beach is unique – shallow water, fine sand and large smooth stones. The crystal blue waters, combined with the remains, immerse visitors in a long-forgotten era.

The town of Limenaria is one of the best organized places on the island. The hotels are small and family-run, with restaurants and shops around the waterfront promenade. The tavernas offer fresh fish, local wines and jam at normal prices. There are two banks, several supermarkets and the possibility of renting cars and bikes. This charming town has a wonderful port that offers not only fresh fish but also spectacular views of the Aegean Sea and the sacred Mount of Athos. From here you can board one of the traditional boats offering magical sea walks to the rest of the beaches.

In recent years, the town of Limenaria has been expanding and has already merged with the neighboring village of Kalivia. The area is well organized and offers all the comforts of its visitors. With all these advantages, Limenaria remains one of the most popular destinations that attracts tourists not only from Greece but also from all over the world.
