PARALIA SYKIA, HALKIDIKI

The resort town of Sikia is located just two or three kilometers from the coast in the southeastern part of Sithonia, it is about 160 km from Thessaloniki and here you can find everything you need during your summer vacation. The population is over 3000 inhabitants, and the name is believed to come from a huge fig tree (sikia), located at the beginning of the village.

The architecture of the city is very reminiscent of that of Mount Athos, as many centuries ago there were large monastic properties in the area that supported the monasteries financially. Walking through Sykia, you will be surprised by the beautiful streets with old houses, each of which has a picturesque courtyard and small benches. In the northern part of the town are the Church of Saint Athanasius, built in 1814 and an old school building with columns, built in the late XIX century. Another landmark worth seeing is the hill surrounded by a castle, where an ancient civilization is believed to have existed. Of course, there are also many cafes, taverns with delicious local cuisine and souvenir shops.

Beaches in Paralia Sykia, Halkidiki

The coastline of Paralia Sykia is extremely suitable for fun and safe leisure with young children – fine soft sand, clean sea bottom and warm crystal waters. The area is full of beautiful beaches, which are located at the foot of the mountain and are known as “the beaches of Sykia”.

The main beach of Paralia Sykia is called Agiоs Iοаnis or also known as Ai Giаnnis. It is located 3 km from the same-name village and occupies about one and a half kilometers of coastline. This sandy beach is extremely popular among lovers of a quiet family vacation by the sea. The beach is the winner of the “Blue flag” award, and the nearby hills offer a magnificent view of the coast and Mount Athos, in good weather you can even see the monasteries in its western part.

In the southern part of the bay there are two small beaches that are almost invisible from the main road: Linaraki and Tоurкοlimniоnаs. Linaraki is longer than Tоurкοlimniоnаs, but the main advantage of both is that they are very well protected from the east and southeast winds that blow daily from Mount Athos.

Along the coast are the lovely beaches Pygаdакi, Klimataria and Kriаritsi.

The beautiful sandy beaches Valti and Griavas are located on the north side. Griavas has a much longer sandy coastline, but is not organized with umbrellas and sunbeds.

Not far from the main beach of Sykia, you will see two old windmills, built in 1890. They are a true example of regional architecture, one of which has a well-preserved stone staircase leading to the top. They can be reached on foot in just a few minutes from the beach.
