DELPHI, GREECE – Sanctuary of the past
Delphi is an archeological site and small town in the Fokida region. It is located on the slopes of Parnassus and 33 km from Galaxidi. In ancient times, Delphi was a religious center for ancient Greece, because this is the place where the most important oracle for the ancient world was located. The famous sanctuary – the oracle of God Apollo was the most revered place in the whole Mediterranean at that time.
Visitors can see the temples of gods, a stadium, a theater and treasures, which were actually gifts to the god. In addition to the amazing antiques, tourists can take advantage of the opportunity to fly a paraglider.
The Pythian Games were also held here, known since the 6th century BC. They include music and sports competitions.
Today, all of Delphi – with its grand antiquities and ruins – is a tourist site and part of the UNESCO World Heritage List.
In the vicinity of Delphi are the settlements: Agii Pantes, Amfissa, Ano Polidrosos, Galaxidi, Polydrossos, Gravia, Eptalofos, Sernikaki, Itea, Lilea, Antikyra, Amfiklia, Arachova, Distomo and others.
